Radon Testing & Remediation

July 2010: HPA Issues New Advice Regarding Radon - click here to find out more

Radon is a colourless, odourless radioactive gas that is formed during the decay of uranium, which is present in the ground in rocks and soil. In low concentrations the gas poses no threat, however if the concentration of radon is allowed to amass inside a building, it can have a serious impact on the health of the property’s occupants.

Radon Exposure

Long-term exposure to high concentrations of radon can lead to lung cancer, with radon being the second most common cause of the disease after cigarette smoking. Each year there are approximately 2500 deaths in the UK as a result of radon exposure.

Radon Testing

Its presence can only be measured using specialist detectors, which must then be sent to a laboratory for technical analysis.

ProTen Services can supply two types of radon detectors; 3 month and 10 day detectors. Ideally, radon detectors should be left in place for 3 months (as radon levels fluctuate constantly), however we are able to supply detectors which can be left in place for 10 days, which act as a screening test and have been proven to give a good indication as to what the longer-term radon levels are likely to be. These tests are commonly used during the house purchase process.

To order a radon test kit, please telephone us on 0808 100 1928 or email radonlab@protenservices.co.uk.

In July 2010, the Health Protection Agency issued new advice on radon in homes and public buildings, and now recommends that homeowners take action to lower radon concentrations that are above 100 Bq/m3. Previously, homeowners were only advised to take action when the radon concentration exceeded 200 Bq/m3. Please click here to read more about the new guidance.

Radon Mitigation

As founder members of the Radon Council, ProTen Services are radon experts and have developed cost-effective solutions to mitigate the effects of radon in the home and workplace. From providing the detectors to test the concentration of radon in a property to installing systems to reduce the gas’s concentration and prevent further infiltration, ProTen Services can assist you in ensuring the health and welfare of your property’s occupants is protected.

Radon specialists, ProTen Services, can install radon barriers for newbuilds, air management units such as positive pressure machines, radon sumps or, where a basement is present, the ADD Waterproofing combined waterproofing and radon control system.
