Welcome to the Team: Liz Sanigar

We sit down and have quick coffee and a chat with our newest recruit Liz Sanigar who holds both the important accreditation CSRT and CSSW from the PCA (Property Care Association) to see what makes her tick.

How long have you worked in the construction/property preservation industry?

7 years – it was a complete change of career for me as my previous role was Senior Media Advisor selling display advertising in the local newspaper!

If you hadn’t been a surveyor, what else would you have been?

Oh, there are so many things I ‘think’ I would have liked to do, but honestly, I love what I do now.

Can you describe your typical working day?

Start the day by checking my emails and the traffic on the route to my first survey before I do anything – nothing like being sat on the M1 in traffic unnecessarily lol. Conduct the surveys for the day, return home, check my emails again, prepare for the following day by calling the customers – always check where they are on google maps – and then write up my reports. It may sound ‘samey’ but every property (and every customer) is different.

Is there a particular property or project you worked on that stands out for you?

There are a few actually, mostly heritage and/or refurbishment. One was a development of apartments in Mansfield Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire – it was a real mix of a building that had grown from a 400 year old stone cottage with several extensions added over the centuries until it became quite a large country residence in the 1900’s.

It’s always interesting to see a project through from start to finish, even if you don’t actually do much work there. The transformation can be staggering as I saw in a church in Crowle, North Lincolnshire as they uncovered some of the original decoration to the walls which was then restored – it looks beautiful now!

I have worked with several of the Lincolnshire Estates – both in the north and south of the county – it’s really satisfying to be part of a team that are helping to preserve our heritage buildings whether they be old farm buildings being repurposed, or renovation and refurbishment of anything from a farm cottage to a rectory to a school.

Another that sticks in my mind is a disused basement that was a former nightclub in Nottingham – they had dry rot that covered every surface – the walls, floors, seating, bar area…everywhere you looked. I believe they actually ended up pulling the building down as part of the regeneration of the area.

Have you ever encountered anything that wasn’t quite as it seemed?

Apart from the usual where a homebuyer report has stated that they believe there is rising damp, when actually it’s a plumbing leak? Every survey is based on investigation – there is rarely just one issue, and the most important thing to do is find the root cause. Often, it’s not what the client thinks it is…

How important do you think experience is to being a successful surveyor?

Whilst experience is important, so is the willingness to learn and to listen. It’s always good to get out of your comfort zone occasionally, and if you don’t know, here at ProTen Services there is always someone you can ask!

What do you get up to when you’re not sorting out property damp problems?

I have 3 dogs – 13 year old Hungarian Viszla called Lazslo, a 12 year old Rhodesian Ridgeback called Biko, and a 9 month old Patterdale Terrier called Wrecks (and yes, you should see what he does to his toys) so a lot of my time outside of work is spent with my fur babies. Once they’re snuggled up asleep, I enjoy a good film (preferably 80s) or binge watching TV series such as Ozark.
